The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to capacity building which will cut across all cadres in the Unified Local Government Service (ULGS) in order to cope with the workings of the newly introduced electronic means of revenue collection and management.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Local Government Establishment, Training and Pensions Office, Mr. Oluwatoyin Onisarotu stated this at a training programme organised for all senior officers cadre, Heads of Administration, Heads of Departments, Council Treasurers, Legal Officers, Auditors, Area Officers and Human Resource Officers within the employ of the local government.
He said that it is expedient for all staff in the Unified Local Government Service to complement the initiative of the State government’s electronic method of revenue collection.
Onisarotu added that if the e-payment method is well embraced, it would translate into increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the State government which according to him, implies that more funds would be available to the Local Government and Local Council Development Areas for more developmental projects.
According to him, “the e-platform would further guarantee transparency and accountability in the way government businesses are handled, optimise revenue collection as well as block wastages or leakages.”
The Permanent Secretary added that the State government has also suspended the engagement of contractors in the tax collection process so as to further encourage transparency in governance.
He therefore advised participants to reciprocate government’s gesture by paying attention and bringing up suggestions and great ideas that will move the State forward.
Director of Training in the Local Government Establishment, Training and Pensions Office, Mrs. Adegun Oluwatosin, said that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has directed that henceforth, trainings should be targeted at resuscitating work ethics and improved revenue generation at the local government level.
“The State Governor is desirous of a local government that can stand on its own and be the bedrock of development for the State with quality staff that will deliver the dividend of democracy at the grassroot to the residents of the State,” she stated.
