The Lagos State Ministry of Education has awarded the 2016 Merit Award Star Prize of a brand new Cherry E5, 1.8litres automatic transmission car to Mr. Ajanaku Babatunde, a staff of Ojota Senior Secondary School, who won the Best Teacher Award in the Secondary School Category.
Speaking at the occasion, which witnessed 66 beneficiaries of various awards in different categories, the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule noted that the event was organized “to reward hard work and motivate our staff and students to break new grounds, enhance productivity and promote diligence and commitment to serve”.
She challenged the runners up in all the award categories to strive harder and remain committed to the pursuit of excellence.
In her words: “It is evident that any of you can win the star prize but be sure that others are equally interested in the feat. Thus, the competition will surely be keener in subsequent years”.
Adebule frowned at admission racket and examination malpractices, stressing that the collection of money from parents for admission purposes is extortion and this government is totally averse to such vice and is determined to eradicate it.
The Deputy Governor also warned against the involvement of teachers and students in examination malpractices which she said is not acceptable to the government, adding that both have consequences and therefore urged those engaging in both vices to retrace their steps to avoid being sanctioned.
Speaking earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello who was Chairman of the occasion said the Merit award was intended to inspire staff and students to put their best into whatever they are doing, saying “Inspiration brings out the best in all human beings”.
He, therefore, commended all the winners of the various awards, while calling on others teachers to redouble their efforts in order to become winners in future.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi noted that apart from the star prize, other prizes given out including Refrigerators, Power Generating Plants, Grinding Machines, Washing Machines, Desk Top Computers, Laptops, Tablets etc, were carefully selected to have direct impacts on the lives of the beneficiaries.
He expressed gratitude to the State government for putting the event on the front burner and making the ceremony a success in spite of the economic recession as it shows the passion the present Administration has for the growth of the sector.
