The Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo has reiterated that the timeline for the issuance of Legal Advice does not exceed two weeks from the receipt of a duplicate case file from the Nigeria Police Force.
He made the affirmation in his office at the Secretariat Alausa, Ikeja while reacting to complaints by members of the public that Legal Advice to the Police on Criminal Matters are unduly delayed by the Directorate of Public Prosecution’s office in the Ministry of Justice before issuance.
“It is necessary to inform the general public that the DPP has policies in place for ensuring speedy issuance of well-considered Legal Advice. However, in exceptional cases where the case is complex, Legal Advice is issued within three weeks”, he asserted.
Onigbanjo revealed that in a situation whereby the Police forwarded the duplicate case file but Counsel makes a request for further information or investigation, the timeline for delivery of the Legal Advice starts to run when the demand for additional information is received.
The Commissioner implored members of the public to forward complaints in respect of non-adherence to the specified timeliness through the following channels:
a. Honourable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice – Email: [email protected]; Telephone: 08033243869
b. Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary – Email: [email protected]; Telephone: 08023034729
He assured members of the public that all complaints received such will be taken up and resolved accordingly.
