… As Lagos Marks 2019 World Teachers’ Day
Three teachers, Mrs. Agnes Iyabo Elusaki and Mr. Ikuseyidunmi Pius Bababo of Government Junior College, Epe, as well as Mr. Oluwasegun Adeniyi of Caleb British International School, Abijo-Lekki, emerged winners of the 2019 President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Award (PTSEA) for exemplary performance in the education sector.
The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, who disclosed this during the 2019 World Teachers’ Day Celebration held at the Sports’ Complex, University of Lagos, Akoka, stated that the feat is a result of the State Government’s priority attention to the Education Sector.
She congratulated and commended the winners for their passion, diligence and dedication to their jobs as well as a commitment to the growth of the Sector, noting that Lagos State, in spite of all odds, can still boast of some of the best brains in the delivery of quality education to our future leaders.
According to her, “No society can achieve meaningful development in the delivery of quality education without having knowledgeable and dedicated teachers. I must confess that only Almighty God can reward your efforts and pray that your labour will not be in vain. Considering your roles, contributions and importance, our teachers must receive and enjoy the rewards for their labour first here on earth and then later in Heaven”.
The Commissioner assured teachers that the profession would be made more attractive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu who has promised to increase budgetary allocation to education, deploy the technology-driven template to drive the Sector, employ more teachers, upscale regular training of teachers, as well as create a conducive teaching and learning environment.
She also applauded the executive members of the Lagos State branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for ensuring proper cohesion, solidarity and welfare of teachers in the State.
Adefisayo affirmed that the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) set aside every 5th October as World Teachers Day to celebrate the invaluable contributions and roles of teachers in their efforts at providing quality education to our future leaders.
Dignitaries present at the event include the Permanent Secretaries/Tutor Generals of the Six Education Districts; Chairman, Lagos State Civil Service Commission, Mrs. Taiwo Oyemade; Chairman SUBEB, Mr. Wahab Alawiye King; Chairman Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Olabisi Ariyo; Director, Education Quality Assurance, Mrs. Bisola Seriki Ayeni and Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers, Otunba Adedoyin Adesina among other stakeholders in the Education Sector.
