Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has commended members of Community Development Associations(CDA), Community Development Committees(CDC) and other relevant stakeholders at the local levels for collaborating with the present administration on development at the grassroots.

The Governor, who gave the commendation today at the Year 2017 Community Day Celebration held at Lagos Island Local Government, noted that people at the grassroots have been cooperating with his administration right from its inception by initiating development projects that have been impacting positively on the lives of the people in local communities across the State.

Ambode, represented by the State Deputy Governor, Dr. Oluranti Adebule stated that there was the need to set aside a date for community day celebration in order to appreciate the organizational acumen, prudence, sacrifice and community efforts of the people at the grassroots, aimed at improving the living conditions of the rural dwellers.

He noted that various community development programmes targeted at the common people would not achieve its desired result without cooperation and peaceful co-existence among residents in the communities.

The Governor also commended members of CDAs and CDCs for collaborating with the State government in its grassroots development programmes by initiating and donating completed projects like schools, health centres, police posts and other infrastructure to their communities.

While reaffirming the commitment of his administration to rural community development programmes,  Ambode pledged that his government would continue to appreciate the invaluable roles played by the people at the grassroots as well as ensure that rural communities are revived and integrated into the mainstream of governance.

“If communities can collectively persuade themselves to build roads, build police posts, if communities can unite together to finance  the construction of a health centres and community centres, definitely, they teach us the values of independence and responsibility and our administration will continue to revive our communities as critical stakeholders in  governance”, he stated.

Governor Ambode said the decentralization of this year’s community day celebration to various Local Government and Council Development Areas is aimed at encouraging more participation by bringing the celebration to the communities.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government, Prince Tijani Olusi disclosed that Governor Ambode has approved that the various Community Development Committees and Community Development Associations be integrated to the State structure of governance as the fourth tiers of government because of their closeness to the people.

He applauded the decentralization of the 2017 Community Day celebration, saying that the new initiative will encourage more involvement by all and sundry at the local level.
