AMBODE ADVOCATES PROPER RECORD-KEEPING FOR QUALITY GOVERNANCE

In commemoration of 20I8 International Archives Day, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has urged all tiers of government to adopt the use of records as vital means of providing solutions to challenges in governance.

The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Seye Oladejo at the event themed “Records and Archives Management in the Public Service: A Key to Good Governance and Quality Service Delivery” in Alausa, Ikeja, described proper record-keeping as a sine-qua-non for quality decision making and effective service delivery to the populace.

While noting that Artificial Intelligence (AI) was, unfortunately, gradually taking the place of manual and accurate record-keeping across the world, Ambode called on governments and policymakers to ensure that history, culture and tradition are protected and procured for posterity evidence, specifically for the socio-cultural value system, commerce, industry and governance.

The keynote speaker at the event and a retired Lagos State Head of Service, Prince Adesegun Ogunlewe described the life of a man as an embodiment of history from God, designed to function based on experience in history.

He urged the public service across the Federation to make it a duty to articulate proper record-keeping as a way of equipping government with adequate data that will assist in proffering solutions to diverse challenges confronting the society.

“A public service that is not given to archive cannot be efficient and effective. For government to be effective, all policies, plans and programmes from yesterday, today must be kept,” Ogunlewe reiterated.

In his contribution, the Director-General of Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau, LASRAB, Mr. Biodun Onayele noted that failure to keep records will lead to substantive loss of heritage and will amount to a future that cannot be projected with facts and data of the past.

Onayele urged institutions to embrace proper archive management and solicited for the cooperation of members of the public in preserving the rich cultural and historical heritage of the State.
