NIGERIA AIRFORCE HAILS LAGOS FIRE SERVICE

The Commander 055 Nigeria Air force, Rasak Olanrewaju on Monday commended the
Lagos State Fire service for its professionalism and effectiveness in incident
management and disaster control in the State. Olanrewaju made this known during
his courtesy visit to the Directorate of Fire Service at Alausa.

According to him, the visit was in recognition of the similarities between the
two organizations in the areas of safety and security of citizenry as well as
the risk involved in the discharge of these legal duties. ‘Recognizing the
similarities in our calling and risk involved, it behooves on us to continue to
foster closer relationships and synergy towards improving our operational
capabilities” he said.

The Commander further expressed the Nigeria Air Force gratitude to the Fire
Service for their timely intervention in curbing the recent fire outbreak at
their Victoria Island facility and expressed the readiness of the Nigeria Air
Force to partner with the Fire Service in the prevention and management of fire
outbreaks as well as safety of lives and property.  Olanrewaju confirmed
that he was highly impressed with the modern equipment on ground and swift effective
response of the officers to disaster calls.

In his earlier remark, the Acting Director Lagos Fire Service Rasaki Musibau
reaffirmed the need for harmonious working relationship between the Fire
service and all other security formations as this would improve productivity
and prevent loss of lives and property. He lamented the frequent attacks on
firefighters by the street urchins and the nonchallant attitude of motorists to
give right of way to fire engine on safety mission.

Musibau further explained that the state Fire Service was created in 1972 to
complement the efforts of the Federal Fire Service and bearing in mind the
status of Lagos State as the commercial hub center of West Africa and also
expressed concern on the number of fire outbreak recorded daily despite the
efforts of government on fire prevention advocacy campaign. According to
him, the state Fire Service is empowered to fight both natural and man-made
disasters and urged Lagosians to familiarize themselves with the toll- free
emergency numbers so as to avert untimely loss of lives. The two organization
later exchanged gift to commemorate the visit.
