Lagos State Office of the Public Defender has extended its
Awareness Campaign to the Lagos Island Local Government Area as part of efforts
to enlighten the populace on the free legal services being rendered by the
present administration through the Office to residents of the State.
Speaking at the Awareness Campaign/Legal Clinic held at the
main hall of Lagos Island Local Government, the Director, Office of the Public
Defender, Mrs. Olayinka Adeyemi said that the purpose of embarking on the
awareness campaign is to further sensitise the people in the environs about the
activities of OPD as well as conducting a free Legal Clinic to reawaken the
public about the New Laws enacted by Lagos State Government to preserve their
Rights and that of the vulnerable.
She stated that the Office was established to render free
legal services in criminal and civil cases to the indigent and vulnerable
residents of the State, with emphasis on issues threatening the socio-economic
right of the poor as well as other disadvantaged groups like women and
Mrs. Adeyemi further explained that the services of the OPD
are basically free and urged the people of the State to take advantage of its
operations which was set up in the year 2000 to cater for those that cannot
afford the fees of a lawyer.
While imploring parents/guardians to closely monitor and
advice their wards, especially the female as cases of defilement is on the
increase in the State, Adeyemi stressed that the State government has no
tolerance for cases of Domestic Violence.
According to her “As part of the State Government
efforts to enhance access to justice by vulnerable members of the society and
reduce to the barest minimum the incidence of domestic violence within the
State, the Lagos State Government has dedicated a telephone number
(07080601080) toll free, for Lagosians”.
Appealing to people of the State to make use of the OPD toll
free line, she explained that the dedicated line is open to members of the
public 24/7, to call Government Officials who will listen to their various
complaints and information on any issue, especially those affecting children,
women and other vulnerable members of the society and offer free legal services
to the needy as may be necessary.
She emphasised that the State Government would not rest on
its oars in ensuring a society free of crime.
Recall that the Office of the Public Defender (OPD) was
established by Lagos State Government to render free legal services to the less
privileged members of the State with focus on the socio-economic rights of
Women, Children and Persons with Disability.
