Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has tasked the handlers of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to inject into its scheme, programmes that will give youths in the country a new orientation towards an ethical rebirth that will make them good citizens of the country.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2019 Batch ‘B’ Pre – Orientation Workshop in Ikeja, the Governor highlighted the urgent need for the NYSC as a body to develop a scheme to reorientate youths towards shunning all forms of anti-social behaviours that could dent the image of the country.
The Governor, represented at the event by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, was optimistic that Nigeria would be great again through a general but ethical rebirth and re-orientation of the youths, adding that NYSC as a scheme is an ideal platform to achieve such laudable initiative.
While noting that the 21st century economic development strategy is premised on technology and entrepreneurial skills, he urged the body to develop programmes that will empower the youths both in entrepreneurial and leadership skills so as to guarantee a better future for the country.
Sanwo-Olu, however, commended the Federal Government for using the scheme to foster unity and peaceful coexistence in the country since it was established, saying the State government would not forget in a hurry, the various contributions of the NYSC Director-General and Corps members to the success of previous elections conducted in the country.
He assured participants that the present administration would continue to support the scheme in ensuring a conducive environment for the body to achieve its noble objective.
“We will deepen the existing partnership between NYSC and the Lagos State Government especially in the areas of Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED), Training, as well as Empowerment for self-employment; this is in our pursuit of ensuring sustainable livelihoods for the youths in Lagos State,” he asserted.
Earlier, the Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, informed the gathering that the pre-orientation workshop is a forum for the NYSC managers and its collaborating partners to review previous orientation courses with a view to tackling identified challenges and mapping out new strategies for successful conduct of a forthcoming programme.
He appealed to State governments across the country to provide permanent camps and upgrade camp facilities available at existing sites, outlining some of the remarkable contributions of the Lagos State Government towards the success of the NYSC to include comprehensive renovation of the orientation camp, augmentation of feeding of corps members, allocation of land for the construction of a permanent orientation camp and partnership of Lagos State Employment Trust Fund with the NYSC to provide start-up business capital for corps members.
