The General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola has disclosed that the State Government is determined to adopt aggressive greening to convey its health and environmental policy of the THEMES Agenda.
This was disclosed on Tuesday at a media parley organised by the Agency in Ikeja to brief the media on its planned activities for the tree planting sensitisation campaign.
Adebiyi-Abiola stated that given the renewed commitment by the present administration to sanitise the State environment of filth and make it an enticing socio-economic entity, the Agency is set to roll out seamless greening initiatives that would emblazon the project of environmental sustainability.
Speaking on the forthcoming tree planting sensitisation campaign slated for 14th of July 2019 across all the 20 Local Governments (LGs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), Adebiyi-Abiola stated that the theme for the exercise is “Clean and Green is our Perfect Dream”,
She informed the media that this year’s campaign will be sponsored by some reputable organisations that have made useful contributions to the successful hosting of the previous editions of the event.
“It is my pleasure to introduce you to GOKADA Nigeria Limited, our main partner with whom we intend to launch the “100X25” campaign with aim of expanding the tree planting project as well as reduce carbon emission across the State”, she said.
While noting that the Campaign would help Lagos State achieve its goal of 10 million trees target by 2020, she maintained that the intention is to bring together 25 forward-looking companies like GOKADA, who are each committed to planting at least 100,000 trees in support of the Agency’s efforts on or before the year 2020.
The General Manager added that AXXELLA Nigeria Plc has also pledged considerable support for the campaign while AXA MANSARD has shown continuous efforts by supporting LASPARK in promoting the greening culture among Lagosians.
While bemoaning the consistent violation of the State’s Greening Law by corporate institutions and other property owners in the State, she declared that the Agency has commenced a crackdown on offenders to ensure total compliance.
Adebiyi-Abiola stated that the enforcement of beautification of setbacks became necessary in the face of flagrant violation of the Law by Banks, Telecom Companies, Petrol Stations, Shopping Malls, Car Parks as well as private individuals, even after several warnings to that effect.
“I want to emphasise here that the Agency has zero tolerance for cutting down of trees anywhere in the State without obtaining required permission as the agency will no longer tolerate such practice and any act of vandalisation of its property anywhere in the State”, the General Manager disclosed.
She disclosed that the agency will commission a recreational park, strategically located beside the Oregun Theatre for ambience and beautification of the environment, for public use before the end of this year.
Adebiyi-Abiola also informed the public that the Agency has begun strategic engagement with the private sector and other relevant stakeholders on the construction of linear park along Maryland, Gbagada and Anthony axis with an off-road bicycle lane and urban agricultural system.
In his own remarks, the Director, Government and Regulatory Affairs, GOKADA, Mr. Kayode Adegbola stated that the significance of partnering with LASPARK is to drive government’s efforts to create a sustainable environment for its citizenry.
He added that LASPARK in recent times has expanded its greening agenda through various strategic partnerships with green compliance organisations to make Lagos State a reference point in greening across Africa.
