The Lagos State government, through the Lagos State Public Service Staff Development Centre, PSSDC, Magodo has commenced a training programme for some staff of the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state so as to allow the advancement of their public service career beyond the Grade Level 07.
The training which will run for nine months will expose the participants to various subjects including Local Government Laws, Finance and Accounts, Administration and Comparative Local Government amongst others.
The Director-General of PSSDC, Dr. Senokon Olufunmi Ajose-Harrison, who spoke at the opening session of the training on Thursday at Magodo, emphasized the importance which local government plays in community development as well as being a yardstick for measuring the performance of other tiers of government.
Dr. Ajose-Harrison stated that the course was designed to expose participants to knowledge, skills and attitude required for high productivity while also availing them the opportunity to break the yoke posed by stagnation as a result of non-availability of training opportunities.
In his words “The course is designed not only to remove your fears about stagnation but also to equip you with skills necessary for the efficient and effective performance of your job”.
He, therefore, implored the participants to participate meaningfully in all class activities, saying that the Centre places a high premium on hard work, diligence and punctuality.
The Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Olukayode Ogunnubi, who was represented at the event by the Director of Career Management at the Commission, Mr. Bamgbose Muritala Olatunji advised the participants to take the course serious as it will help their career advancement and make them compete at par with their colleagues.
In his words, “I want you to seek for more improvement in the discharge of your duties as there is no limit to what you can achieve”, stressing that the training, in addition to eliminating career stagnancy, also seeks to equip participants with necessary administrative capabilities that would assist them in discharging their duties meritoriously.
In the same vein, the Director, Training Local Government and Security Service, PSSDC Magodo, Mr. Adeniran Kasali disclosed that the programme was conceived in collaboration with the Lagos State University and, as such, it is acceptable for admission into the diploma programme at the centre.
“The certificate that would be given to you at the end of this training is a major requirement for your promotion by the Local Government. Apart from this, this certificate is also acceptable for admission into Local Government Administration and Development Studies which is a collaboration between PSSDC, Magodo and Lagos State University, LASU”, the Director explained.
