LASG SETS UP COMMITTEES TO DOMESTICATE NATIONAL BUILDING CODE 


 
The Lagos State Government has constituted sub-committees to domesticate the National Building Code.
 
Speaking at a meeting with the members on Wednesday in Alausa, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, said the sub-committees comprise representatives of relevant government agencies and the seven professional bodies working in the built environment grouped into Predesign, Design, Construction and Post-construction.

Salako urged the professionals to make adequate technical inputs that would ensure the final outcome of the process is in tune with realities.
 
“We have started an inclusive process in which all relevant professionals in the built environment are able to work with us to develop and own a Lagos Building Code that we can rely upon for the regulation of the physical environment”, he said. 
 
The Commissioner explained that the responsibilities of the sub-committees include paying attention to the standard of materials, energy efficiency and environment-friendly measures in the sector in line with the peculiarities of Lagos State while also considering challenges militating against a sustainable environment in the State.
 
He maintained that evolving an acceptable building code for Lagos State has enormous advantages for the environment, the State and its people, particularly in the areas of health and safety, security as well as combating building collapse. 
 
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, called for the cooperation of members in their respective sub-committees, urging them to give their best to evolve a reliable Lagos State Building Code.
 
“I am certain that beginning from here, you will all work towards advocating this important initiative and thereby create the needed environment for the idea to thrive in your respective spheres of influence”, she said.
 
The meeting will continue throughout the week under the aegis of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, the technical partners of Lagos State Government on the domestication of the National Building Code.
