– LSMTL Charges Retrofit Engineers

The General Manager of the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency (LSMTL), Engr. Olayinka Abdul has charged Retrofit Engineers to be intentional in their professional development and supports the drive in averting building disasters across Lagos State.

Speaking to a team of Nigerian Institute of Builders (NIOB) Executives during a visit to the Agency recently, Abdul admonished for a working synergy amongst all construction professionals to curb mediocrity resulting in buildings’ collapse in the State.

She said, “There is a need for systematic coordination amongst specialists in the built industry for all construction of structures. This enhances proficiency for optimal satisfaction. If all Architects, Geologists, Civil Engineers etc.. have a streamlined dossier of collaborations, the episodes of buildings’ collapse will be effectively averted because they will all contribute towards ascertaining durable structures”, she opined.

While reiterating the need to ensure a communal interest of specialists for all structures, the General Manager averred that lack of proper scrutiny on jobs have fostered decadence on their implementations to the extent of such structures caving in.

She maintained that use of sub-standard materials pose high risks to lives and investments, hence, the need for adherence to regulations that govern the construction industry, especially as it relates to specific purposes for construction, whether for residential/commercial purposes.

In his address, the President NIOB; Bldr Adeoye Thomas, expressed concern about the incessant incidences of buildings’ collapse in Lagos State. “There is a need for everyone to follow due process, especially with the aggressive nature which Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency currently employs to avoid cases of building collapse across the State”, he said.
