LAGOS SET FOR MAIDEN EDITION OF INDIVIDUAL BOXING CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), is set to organise the maiden Individual Boxing Club Championship,  scheduled to hold from October 21 to 27 at the Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School, Mushin, Lagos.

Boxers will converge for the 7-day tournament designed to unearth more talents and encourage mass participation of clubs and all-inclusiveness, serving as an outlet for pugilists to intensify their preparations for the forthcoming national championships.

In a statement issued today by the Commission, the championship will feature male and female boxers from the various registered boxing clubs in the State in which a coach will register one boxer per weight on 13 male and 12 female weight categories.

The male category 13 weights that will be on display are 48kg, 51kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63.5kg, 67kg, 71kg, 75kg, 80kg, 86kg, 92kg and 92+kg, while the female category weights are: 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63kg, 66kg, 70kg, 75kg, 81kg and 81+kg.

The concept of the Lagos State Individual Club Boxing Championship is to encourage clubs across the state and empower the youth, in line with Grassroots Sports Development.

The week-long championships are in a knockout format where a defeated boxer exits automatically. Every winner in the different weight category, both male and female, shall proceed to the next phase under the supervision of the state’s referees and judges.

The promotion of sports is not limited to boxing as the Lagos State Sports Commission is working assiduously to continue its effective developmental programmes in driving the impact of physical activities on the community, shaping the lives of the youth and bringing competitive sports to the grassroots level.

The championship is primarily designed to discover budding talents, encourage mass participation in sports and promote inclusiveness through the engagement of talented athletes at the grassroots level.

The forthcoming Lagos State Individual Boxing Club Championship will be staged in the five divisions of the State, while the pilot edition will take place in Mushin based on the high concentration of boxers. Ajegunle has been designated as the next venue of the event after this first edition.

This championship is in line with the mission of the LSSC as the State custodian for Sports Development.

The Lagos State Referees and Judges Officials will be deployed and engaged for the period of the championship to ensure fair and well-coordinated officiating standards.
