LAGOS TAKES CENTRE STAGE AT UK – AFRICA TRADE EXPO IN LONDON 

Lagos State showcased its vibrant culture and economic potential at the UK Africa Trade Expo held at the Kensington and Chelsea Conference and Event Centre in London on Friday

During her address on Culture and Business, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka emphasised the importance of leveraging Lagos’ rich cultural heritage for economic growth and sustainable development. She noted that culture is a living asset that can create jobs, enhance tourism, and foster innovation.

The Commissioner highlighted Africa’s diverse traditions, arts, and crafts as crucial to various industries, from fashion to film, music, and cuisine. She also pointed out that Nollywood has become one of the largest film industries globally, generating billions in revenue and providing thousands of jobs. Similarly, the African fashion industry is gaining international recognition, showcasing the creativity of African designers on global platforms.

Benson-Awoyinka further stressed the essential interplay between culture and business, stating that it creates opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation, allowing artisans and creatives to monetise their talents and empower local communities. She urged attendees to embrace this synergy as a catalyst for transformation, unlocking cultural heritage to drive economic growth and elevate Africa’s global standing.

“Let us invest in our arts, promote our heritage, and forge partnerships that celebrate our diversity. Together, we can build a future where our culture thrives and drives economic success”, she stated.

Other speakers at the event included Peter Walker, Life Patron of the British Nigeria Chamber of Commerce; Malebogo Kote, Director of International Business at the Botswana High Commission; and Queen Ronke Ademiluyi-Ogunwusi, Co-founder of the UK Africa Trade Expo and Africa Fashion Week, who provided additional insights on the discussions.
