… Harps On Massive Advocacy, Sensitisation for Successful Census
Lagos State Government is taking a significant bold step forward with the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS) to enhance birth certificate accessibility from 0-5 years in Lagos State. This innovative system aims to enhance the state’s civil registration and vital statistics, aligning with Nigeria’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 16.9.2 for legal identity for all.
The Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission (NPC), Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye disclosed this during her recent visit to the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations to establish a collaborative committee.
While emphasising the importance of massive advocacy and sensitisation for the successful census, Oladunjoye said the aim of the Committee is to harmonise efforts, address key issues, and ultimately achieve the Commission’s objectives.
She explained that by setting up the committee, the government sought to leverage the Ministry’s expertise and resources to drive the Commission’s mandate forward.
According to her, “The initiative aims to provide a seamless, efficient and reliable registration process, streamlining the issuance of Automated Birth Certificates and National ID Numbers for citizens. This digital transformation will significantly reduce paperwork and ensure accuracy in record-keeping, making it easier for citizens to access essential documents”.
The Federal Commissioner further highlighted the key objectives of e-CRVS that would Improve access to birth certificates, adding that citizens can easily obtain crucial documents for identity verification, education and healthcare.
Oladunjoye added that this would enhance data management, better data analysis, policy formulation and also improve planning for governance.
On his part, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde expressed his enthusiasm for the e-registration innovation, highlighting its potential to enhance disaster management in Lagos State. He noted that the system’s reliable data will facilitate more effective information development planning.
He averred that he’ll leverage his experience and knowledge to support the Commission in successfully implementing initiatives like the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS).
Earlier, the State Director of the National Population Commission (NPC), Mr. Sadiku, updated the Committee members on the activities, programmes, achievements, and proposed initiatives to achieve universal access to the information database.
By adopting the e-CRVS system, Lagos State is poised to become a model for other states in Nigeria, demonstrating its commitment to leveraging technology for improved governance and development.
