‘SpeakHER’ CONFERENCE 2024: LASG SUPPORTS WINNERS, PARTICIPANTS WITH N15M

The Lagos State Government has once again demonstrated its commitment to promoting leadership development and the empowerment of young girls, ladies, and women by providing financial support for the winners of the SpeakHER Conference 2024 competition, held recently in Lagos.

The SpeakHER Conference, co-founded by Ayo Mairo-Ese and Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani, aims to help young girls find their voices and step onto greater platforms through effective communication. 

The competition, themed: “Take the Stage: Win with Words,” took place at Glitz Event Centre, Oniru, Lagos, and was attended by the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, who represented Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, through the Honourable Commissioner, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to initiatives that promote women’s development. 

As a demonstration of support, he

announced a ₦10 million donation for all conference participants.     Additionally, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka, on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, presented a ₦5 million prize to the Speakathon’s overall winner.

The Governor commended the initiative for its vital role in mentorship, networking, and advocacy, emphasising the event’s contribution to helping women develop leadership skills through workshops and collaborative opportunities.

“The theme, ‘Take the Stage: Win with Words,’ is a powerful call to action, encouraging women to share their stories and use their influence to reshape narratives. We fully support initiatives that uplift women, build confidence, and promote education, striving towards a Lagos where everyone can thrive”, said Governor Sanwo-Olu

The conference featured keynote addresses by distinguished speakers, including Cecelia Akintomide, Senior Executive Advisor to the Group CEO of Ecobank Transnational, who motivated young women to remain resilient in pursuing their goals. Media personality IK Osakioduwa also shared insights on the significance of preparation and adaptability in professional life, aligning with the event’s focus on inspiring leadership through communication.

In the secondary school category, Ideal Girls High School, Lagos, emerged as the first-place winner, followed by International School Lagos in second place and Obele Community High School in third.

 Other competition categories included Storytellers, Faith and Inspiration Angels, and Advanced Storytellers.

The SpeakHER Conference continues to serve as a pivotal platform for women’s empowerment, making a lasting impact across Nigeria.
