Y2024 CAREER WEEK: CSC CALLS FOR COLLABORATION AMONG BUILT PROFESSIONALS 

The Lagos State Civil Service Commission (CSC) has emphasised the importance of inter-functional collaboration among the core professionals in the built environment.  This was said to be the panacea for sustainable infrastructural development in the face of the multi-dimensional challenges confronting the State. 

Speaking during the opening ceremony of the Year 2024 Civil Service Commission’s Career Week, held at the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), the Chairman of the Commission, Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo highlighted the need to leverage the expertise and experience of the diverse pool of professionals in the built sector through effective collaboration for efficient service delivery in the sector.

The Chairman stressed that the future of urban development and regeneration in Lagos would be largely predicated on the level and depth of cooperation between the various sub-sectors within the built environment and called for open communication and teamwork among the key players. 

Mrs. Fabamwo acknowledged the strategic role of professionals in the built sector to infrastructural development and the critical importance of a robust infrastructure as being central to the actualization of the development aspirations of the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, particularly in a rapidly expanding megacity like Lagos.  

She expressed optimism that, going by the Theme and Content of the Y2024 Career Week Programme, participants would be exposed to contemporary industry practices and innovations within the built and allied sectors.  She also emphasised the need to be intentional in fostering a better ethical climate and strengthening the existing synergy across different professional lines.

Declaring the Career Week open, the Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro commended the Commission for creating a structured platform for knowledge sharing across different cadres in the built sector to build a dynamic and strong workforce with the capacity to drive the development agenda of the present administration. 

The Head of Service recalled his attendance at the Y2023 Edition of the Career Week, which was designed for the Procurement Cadre, noting the remarkable impact the programme had on civil servants across different cadres with far-reaching implications on the procurement process of the State Public Service.

Hon. Oladele Ajayi, Chairman of the House of Assembly Committee on Establishments, Training, Pensions, and Public Service, represented by Mr. Kehinde Tunwase, reiterated the commitment of the State House of Assembly, under the auspices of his Committee to continue to prioritise the interests of the Statutory Service Commissions/Boards and other core establishment MDAs under its oversight functions.

The Permanent Secretary, CSC, Mr. Akinbode Obadina expressed confidence that the primary objectives of this year’s Career Week would be achieved with clear direction for implementable solutions for professionals in the built sector. He thanked the Chairman, House Committee on Establishments, Training, Pensions and Public Service for his support to the Commission. He also thanked the Head of Service for his enduring commitment to the well-being of all public servants. 

The Career Week, which had in attendance a wide range of professionals from the built environment, also featured interactive sessions characterised by presentations, panel discussions on emerging trends such as green building practices, the role of technology in the development of a smart city, and sustainable urban regeneration planning.

All the Commission Members of the Civil Service Commission – Commission I, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi, Commissioner II, CSC, Hon. Kamal Olorunoje, Commission III, CSC, Mr. Babatunde Seriki, Commissioner IV, CSC, Hon. Hodewu Suru-Avoseh – were in attendance.

Other distinguished personalities present at the event were the Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS, Dr. Olajide Babatunde; Chairman, Audit Service Commission, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adegbuji-Onikoyi; members of the Body of Permanent Secretaries; the Director-General, Public Service Staff Development Centre, Mr. Adio Moses; General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, Tpl. Animashaun; General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Arch. Gbolahan Oki and Directors in the Built Environment.
