Following an impressive performance at the Zonal Elimination Ball Games in Osogbo, the Lagos contingent on Monday departed for Asaba, Delta State, to participate in the 8th National Youths Games.
The National Under 15 Championships will be held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, and other designated venues where the youngsters can showcase their skills across various sports.
Recall that Team Lagos dominated the regional qualification series held recently in Osogbo, Osun State, securing 10 slots in Basketball, Football, Rugby, Cricket, Abula (Traditional Sport), Volleyball, Hockey, Beach Volleyball and Handball.
Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Cycling, Ayo, Kokowa, Chess, Scrabble, Shooting, Table Tennis, Fives, Squash, Darts, Tennis, Golf, Swimming, Badminton, Athletics and Para Sports are among others that the state athletes will compete in the highly anticipated games in Asaba.
In his farewell message, the Director-General, Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu charged the youngsters to maintain a high level of sportsmanship at the developmental championships, having prepared adequately for the Games.
He also enjoined the athletes to stay focused as there are rewards for perseverance, consistency, patriotism, and hard work, particularly in sports.
“As a state that breeds and nurtures talents, Lagos is a place where the grass is greener with the best of incentives, sports infrastructure and manpower that encourage the athletes to achieve sporting excellence. Lagos is a place where we harvest the best sports talents in Nigeria with the level of sports infrastructure and other variables that encourage effective sports development”, he stated.
The National Youth Games is designed to breed and inspire future talents to participate and compete under the rules and regulations guiding the scheme to further engender camaraderie and social cohesion among the youths.
