EDUCATION DISTRICT I TASKS TEACHERS ON 21ST CENTURY TEACHING METHODOLOGY
… Celebrates Subject Teachers’ Day
Subject teachers in Education District I have been advised to embrace modern teaching techniques and the use of instructional materials that are 21st century compliant to deepen students’ understanding of the various subjects being taught in school.
The Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary of the District, Mrs. Margaret Titilayo Solarin, gave the advice while speaking at the Year 2021 Subject Teachers’ Association day held at Government Senior College Agege.
She said that celebrating the Subject Teachers was worthwhile considering the sacrifices they made, in cash and kind, to make a meaningful impact on their students towards becoming better and useful individuals in future.
According to her, the annual programme of the Subject Teachers’ celebration, which usually brings teachers of various subjects together, should also pave way for the exchange of ideas that will enable students to get the best from the teachers.
She emphasised that researchers have proven that students learn better and faster when teachers make use of instructional materials that the students can easily identify and relate with, urging the teachers to adopt the best instructional materials and localise them appropriately.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, “Capacity Enhancement Through The Use Of Technology In The 21st Century Teaching And Learning”, Solarin underscored the need to continuously enhance the capacity of Subject Teachers in the aspect of the technology used for teaching.
She said: “It’s time to discard old notes, get new ones and embrace the use of interesting audiovisuals during lectures. It has been proven that using these modern instructional materials, enables students to recall easily what they have been taught in the classroom during examinations”.
The TG/PS acknowledged the gesture of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, especially for making students of public schools technologically savvy and for providing mobile phones to further enhance learning both at home and in schools.
The Coordinator of Subject Association, District I, Mrs. Olaitan Okegbenro, described the year 2021 Subject Teachers Day celebration as a unique way of exhuming the creative prowess of the teachers.
Mrs. Okegbenro appreciated the State Government for embracing new initiatives that made teaching and learning easier for both teachers and students, particularly by replacing the use of chalk and chalkboard with the use of marker boards, laptops and instructional materials.
Also speaking, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Unique International, Mr. Oluseyi Shoremekun, expressed the need to ensure sustainable development goals in Lagos by establishing regular engagement of students to think in terms of sustainability in the food system and private sector.
