The management of General Hospital, Ikorodu, has received the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ikorodu Unit Command, on a courtesy visit to address accident victims on admission at the hospital as part of activities to commemorate the Y2021 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.
Speaking during the visit, the Medical Director/CEO, General Hospital, Ikorodu, Dr. Taiwo Hassan, stressed that advocacy is key in the fight against road accidents.
His words: “The road is not the only factor that causes accidents. The drivers too need to be cautioned against taking substances that could blur their vision or negatively affect their alertness while driving. Just recently, our hospital’s Mental Health Committee visited motor parks in Ikorodu to educate drivers on substance abuse, drunk driving and others. The FRSC should replicate such advocacy in all its units”.
The Head of Department, Orthopaedic and Dermatology, Dr. Bashir Oloyede, implored the FRSC Unit to go for Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification to enhance their efficiency at every accident scene.
“The BLS is a variety of non-invasive emergency procedures performed by first responders to assist in the immediate survival of a patient or victim until more advanced and definitive medical care can be implemented. These first aid measures include Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), haemorrhage control, stabilisation of fractures, spinal immobilisation and basic first aid. Some of these procedures can be life-saving and are often important to implement early”, he said.
The FRSC Commander, Ikorodu Unit Command, Assistant Corps Commander Olawale Kareem, stated that the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year.
In his words: “The FRSC has set aside one week before the Remembrance Day to visit all emergency service providers to appreciate them for their support. The day offers an opportunity to draw attention to the scale of emotional and economic devastation caused by road crashes and to map out strategies on how we can stem the tide in the country”.
After thanking the hospital’s management for their support and advice, the Commander and his team were led to the Accident and Emergency Centre as well as the Male Ward to address the accident victims therein.
Some basic provisions needed by the patients were also presented to the hospital by the FRSC team to mark the day.
