As top government officials converged for the third edition of the Lagos State Commissions’ Summit, the Chairman, Lagos State Civil Service Commission (CSC), Mrs. Olubunmi Fabamwo has underscored the importance of standardisation, synergy and collaboration amongst Statutory Service Commissions and Boards for a unified Public Service.
In her welcome address at the two-day event held in Ikeja, Fabamwo posited that the choice of the theme: “Building a Sustainable and Resilient Public Service in the Face of Economic Realities”, portends to provide a collective solution to the current economic climate by devising means to sustain and invariably improve the accomplishment of the Commissions’ respective responsibilities.
The Chairman observed that the Summit has over the last three years offered the Commissions the opportunity to incubate initiatives and policy reforms on human resource governance and their subsequent operationalization for a strong workforce in the State Public Service.
She urged the Chairmen of Statutory Commissions’ and Board to engage in discussions centred on formulating strategies to streamline procedures, reduce inefficiencies, and adopt innovative approaches that would ultimately enhance the quality of governance. As the ultimate expectations of Lagosians is quality service delivery; irrespective of the Agency of government providing the said services.
In his goodwill message, the Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Establishments, Training, Pensions and Public Service, Hon. Oladele Ajayi, who declared the Summit open, emphasised the strategic importance of the Summit towards building a responsive and a 21st-Century Public Service.
He stressed that the insights provided at the Summit would undoubtedly inform future policies for possible reforms in the Public Service that would ensure quality service delivery to meet the expectations of Lagosians.
The Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Health Service Commission, Dr. Muyiwa Eniayewun, stated that, “Although government establishments are structurally bureaucratic, it is however imperative to introduce some measure of flexibility and innovation to adapt its processes to current realities to meet the evolving needs of the citizenry.
He noted the pivotal importance of the Summit’s theme as an opportunity to come up with new strategies to drive and engender a new culture of service orientation to propel the much needed changes within the Service.
The Permanent Secretary of CSC, Mr. Akinbode Obadina, in his vote of thanks, assured the participants and other stakeholders that the resolutions and recommendations from the Summit will be compiled into a report as input that will guide future human resource reforms in the Lagos State Public Service.
He made reference to the potency of the resolutions reached at the previous editions of the Commissions’ Summit, revealing that those resolutions have been embraced as basis for some innovations and policies within the Service.
The Summit featured several sessions, including paper presentations from national and global industry and subject area experts and panel discussions among others; all aimed at addressing critical issues facing the public sector with contemporary topics on the dynamism of human resource principles and practice with emphasis on social inclusion, employees’ wellness and safety, among others as the blueprint to the ‘NOW OF WORK’
In attendance at the two-day Summit were Chairmen of Statutory Service Commissions and Boards namely the Chairman, Health Service Commission, Dr (Mrs.) Atinuke Onayiga; Chairman, Audit Service Commission, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adepeju Adegbuji-Onikoyi; Chairman, Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Kamal Ayinde Bayewu; Chairman, Teaching Service Commission, Mrs. Victoria Mopelola Peregrino and the Chairman, House of Assembly Service Commission, Otunba, Richard Akin Oshungboye
Other distinguished personalities at the event were the Commissioners from CSC, Members of the Body of Permanent Secretaries and Boards’ Secretaries of core establishment MDAs, Senior Civil Servants, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
