ALIMOSHO GH CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL NURSES WEEK

The Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, on Friday, held an event to commemorate the Year 2021 International Nurses Week with the theme ‘A Voice to Lead, Vision for Future Healthcare’.

Speaking at the event, the Apex Nurse at the Hospital, Mrs. Abiba Abiodun, stated that the celebration was the grand finale of week-long activities to honour the founder of modern-day nursing, Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

She revealed that the annual celebration of International Nurses’ Week was initiated in 1974 by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) to highlight the significant roles of nurses, reiterating that the important role they play among other healthcare providers in society cannot be overemphasised.

While eulogising the profession and applauding Nurses for spreading joy and providing comfort to the sick, Mrs. Abiodun acknowledged the relevance, responsibilities as well as dangers that members of the noble profession face daily in the line of duty, particularly with the Coronavirus pandemic which has caused the death of many nurses across the world.

According to her, “COVID-19 has dealt a heavy blow on the profession as a result of the number of Nurses infected by the disease and the high number of casualties recorded among healthcare workers, especially at the initial phase of the pandemic”.

She, however, added that strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols such as proper and regular hand hygiene, physical distancing and use of face masks, among others, have tremendously curtailed the spread of Coronavirus disease among the healthcare workers.
