CIRCULAR ECONOMY: LASG INTENSIFIES EFFORT, UNVEILS NEW INITIATIVE ‘ECONEXUS’

Lagos State government at the weekend introduced a new Circular Economy initiative – EcoNexus, to boost its drive to ensure economic transformation and development of its people and state in general.

The launch, made with its partners and stakeholders, was held at Four Points by Sheraton, Victoria Island, and is championed by the Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy under the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George said the new initiative is a testament to the commitment of the State government to sustainable economic growth and climate action.

Mr. George said the ‘EcoNexus’ marks a new chapter for Lagos and described the initiative as a platform designed to streamline circular economy efforts, eliminate redundancies, and establish a coordinated system for resource management and waste recovery, centralising these efforts to maximise resources.

His words: “EcoNexus, a transformative initiative reinforcing Lagos State’s commitment to sustainable economic growth and climate action. EcoNexus builds upon initiatives like the ‘Leave No One Behind’ and ‘EcoCirculate’, which have demonstrated the power of public-private collaboration in improving living standards and promoting sustainability, especially for marginalised communities. Expanding these efforts, EcoNexus will transform Lagos into a global leader in green innovation and sustainable urban development”.

The Commissioner restated the government’s commitment to climate action for a resilient economy: “Lagos State remains committed to aligning our budget priorities with EcoNexus goals, supporting climate action and green investment to build an inclusive, resilient economy. I urge industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to seize this opportunity and collaborate in shaping a sustainable future for Lagos,” he said.

During her presentation, the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Mrs. Titi Oshodi said, “The circular economy is at the heart of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly in areas like Health, Environment, and Economic Development. By integrating circular practices, we are addressing waste management, reducing pollution, and creating new job opportunities.

”This event is all about harnessing the power of collaboration, just as we have noted the alliance between farmers, engineers, a financial institution and a sustainable entrepreneur. We aim to catalyze connections across sectors, aligning public policy with private-sector innovation. By working together, we can shape a scalable economic model that is sustainable, resilient, and adaptable to the socio-economic and cultural shifts happening around us,” she said.
